Relocation guide, the answers

The questions every relocating family asks us.

These are the same questions we answer on the phone every week, written out so you have them straight from the start. Every answer is grounded in official sources or careful framing, and we flag anything you should double-check before acting. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Do I need to change my car registration after moving to Idaho?
Yes. Idaho gives new residents 30 days from establishing residency to title and register vehicles, whether or not your out-of-state registration has expired. A late penalty can apply if title work slips, so do it early in your first month.
Do I need to get an Idaho driver's license?
Yes. You have 30 days from establishing residency to obtain an Idaho driver's license or ID card. Bring your out-of-state license, proof of residency, and the required documents to the county DMV (Idaho Transportation Department).
Does Idaho have a state income tax?
Yes. Idaho uses a single flat rate of 5.3 percent for 2025 and 2026, one of the larger cuts in the state's history. Social Security benefits are exempt from Idaho income tax; most other retirement income is taxed like wages. Confirm the current schedule with the Idaho State Tax Commission or a CPA.
What are Idaho property taxes like?
Idaho property is re-assessed by the county each January at market value, and the tax is set by local levy rates. A homeowner's exemption covers up to 50 percent (max $125,000) of an owner's primary residence. Typical effective rates in Ada County have historically run around half a percent (Idaho State Tax Commission, 2025 Average Property Tax Rates report: Ada County overall average ~0.64%), below the national median of roughly 1 percent (U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey / Tax Foundation data, ~0.9%), though your exact bill depends on your town's levies.
What is the sales tax in Idaho?
The state sales tax is 6 percent (Idaho State Tax Commission, current state rate for 2025 and 2026) and, unlike many states, Idaho does tax most groceries. A grocery tax credit offsets some of that for residents. Some resort cities add local option taxes on top of the state rate.
What is the weather really like in Boise?
Boise is a semi-arid high desert with four real seasons: roughly 206 sunny days, about 13 inches of rain, and about 18 inches of snow a year (BestPlaces climate data, consistent with NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Summers are hot and dry, winters are cold and sunny with modest snow, and spring and fall are mild. The biggest change for many transplants is the sunshine and dryness, not the cold.
I work remotely for a company in another state. What should I know?
Moving your home to Idaho can change your employer's obligations around income tax withholding, unemployment insurance, and workers' compensation. Every company and state setup is different, so loop in your HR team and a tax professional before you make the move. This is one of the most common, and most avoidable, surprises we see.
How does Boise's cost of living compare to where I'm coming from?
Cost of living only means something compared with a specific market, so the honest answer starts with yours. As reference points from late 2025, Boise's median home price sat around $540,000 (Intermountain MLS year-end 2025 statistics), well below Seattle's and close to Portland's. Tracker-based cost-of-living differentials vary too widely for us to verify, so we do not print hard percentages; ask us for current, sourced figures for the specific town and home size you want.
Can you help us sell our current home in another state?
We are licensed and based in Idaho, so for a sale in your current state we can recommend a trusted listing agent in that market, then coordinate the timing so your equity is ready when your Boise deal closes. Ask us for a referral.
Do we really need a local agent to relocate?
You do not strictly need one, but it is the single highest-leverage step on our checklist. A local team gets you the honest town comparisons, the school-boundary verification, the current pricing, and the 30-day admin sprint, so you avoid the expensive surprises that come from doing it alone from 500 miles away.

Still have a question?

Ask us anything about the move, the market, or a specific town. A real human on our team replies, usually within one business day.
